About Energy Saving Day (E-Day)
Energy Saving Day (E-Day) will be happening between 6pm on Wednesday 27 February 2008 and 6pm on Thursday 28 February.
E-Day's activities will include the following:
(1) St Paul's Cathedral launch (5:00pm - 7:00pm, Wed 27 February)
A launch event at St Paul's Cathedral will feature:
(a) The Cathedral's illuminations being left off
(b) A candle lit vigil
(c) A bicycle-powered cinema
(d) Fun and factual films
(e) Games
(f) A bicycle clinic
(g) A welcoming address by the Bishop of London
(h) An expression of thanks from Matt
The launch event will start at 5pm and finish at 7:00pm on Wednesday 27 Feb.
(2) Leave It Off experiment (6:00pm, Wed 27 Feb - 6:00pm, Thurs 28 Feb)
Starting at 6pm on Wednesday 27 Feb everyone in the UK is being asked:
(a) To leave off electrical items which are not in use, and
(b) To leave these items off for as long as possible.
Items which could be left off for E-Day might include:
- Lights left on in empty rooms or overnight
- Televisions left on standby overnight
- Mobile phone chargers left plugged in or
- Computers or printers left on overnight
Over the following 24 hours, E-Day will endeavour to show how even small energy saving measures can be made to add up, and potentially play a part in tackling climate change.
The results will be shown on E-Day's homepage (www.e-day.org.uk).
E-Day will finish at 6pm on Thurs 28 Feb.
The total savings of money, energy and carbon associated with E-Day will then be calculated and made available in time of the evening news bulletins.
(3) Energy Companies : Insulation Offer
The UK's big electricity companies have offered to make it simpler to insulate a large number of households for free or at a greatly reduced cost.
(4) A personal statement by Lord Robert May FRS
Lord May is a Professor in Oxford University's Department of Zoology and a Former President of the Royal Society. He will be recording a personal statement in support of Energy Saving Day.
Dr Bob Ward has also written a document which summarises "10 things you need to know about climate change".
(5) Charities : Positive solutions to climate change
Several of the UK's biggest environment and development charities have suggested a range of positive solutions, for inclusion in E-Day, which might help us to address the causes and effects of climate change.
(6) Tesco : Energy labels
Tesco will be announcing an initiative which will help their customers to save energy and to support the goals of Energy Saving Day.
(7) The Energy Saving Trust : New Technology
The Energy Saving Trust has offered to highlight some of the new technologies which will help you to save energy more easily and effectively. They will also be offering some advice on the most cost effective ways of saving energy.
(8) Together : 1 Million Tonnes of CO2 Target
The Together campaign, and it's household name partners, have pledged to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1 million tonnes by next E-Day.

E-Day's You Tube channel has also compiled a selection of the best clips available on You Tube.
(10) Energy Saving Scorecard
For those who use Facebook a social application has been developed an Energy Saving Scorecard which allows you to record what you have left of for E-Day, and to share and compare your energy saving measures with your friends and family on Facebook.
E-Day's Facebook group also offers a good point of contact for news and updates.
