Isles of Scilly Earth Summit

The Isles of Scilly Earth Summit will take place in the Town Hall of St Mary's between Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October, 2009. At this public event, local, national and international islanders will talk about the impacts that climate change and human activities are having on their islands, as well as their hopes and fears for the future.  The islands due to be covered in these talks include the Carteret Islands (Papua New Guinea), Samoa, The Galapagos Islands, the Navarino islands (Chile), Tiritiri Matanga (New Zealand) and the Isles of Scilly. The Carteret Islands

Ursula Rakova

Ursula is the spokesperson for the Carterets community in Papua New Guinea (PNG).  Born on the Carterets atoll of Han, she is the founder of Tulele Peisa, a local NGO based in Buka in the Bougainville province of PNG. Ursula has been entrusted by her community to co-ordinate the safe and smooth voluntary relocation and resettlement of the islanders. Her islands are no more than 1.2m above sea level and amongst the first to have to be evacuated by a government due to climate change.

The Galapagos Islands

Felipe Cruz

Felipe Cruz is the Director of Technical Assistance for the Charles Darwin Foundation, Galapagos Islands. He was born on Floreana Island, one of the five inhabited islands in the Galapagos. Felipe has devoted a lot of time to building and supervising the team of hunters working on the eradication of goats from Pinta Island; pigs, donkeys and goats from Santiago Island; and goats and donkeys from Isabela Island.

Madagascar

Herizo Andrianandrasana

Herizo Andrianandrasana is a forest Engineer from Madagascar who has worked for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust for the last 8 years. He is responsible for overseeing all of the DWCT's ecological monitoring activities in Madagascar and has helped to develop appropriate management plans for many sites of conservation importance.

Zanzibar

Dr Lizzie Tyler

Lizzie Tyler has made a specialism of studying the effects of different types of marine reserves on coral reef fish populations in Zanzibar, Tanzania.  Over the past 10 years, her work has involved working closely with local fishermen and setting up long-term monitoring programmes on some of the coral reefs surrounding Zanzibar.

Dr Mark Spencer

Dr Mark Spencer is the Curator of the British and Sloane Herbariums at the Natural History Museum and will talk about some of the invasive species that have colonised islands all over the world.

Samoa

Fiu Mataese

As an indigenous Samoan and a Pacific Islander, Fiu has represented the indigenous peoples in many of the global conferences since the UNCED in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fiu Mataese Elisara-La'ulu joined OLSSI as its Executive Director in February 2002, but has also worked for the UN and the Global Environment Facility all over the South Pacific.
