Social Application: E-Day's Energy Saving Scorecard (Facebook)

E-Day has created a Facebook application which allows you to record what you have left off for E-Day and then to share, and to compare, the energy saving measures you have undertaken with your Facebook friends.

You can install this application on your Facebook profile page by visiting this link:

http://apps.facebook.com/energysavingday/install.php

If you have switched off two light bulbs that would have otherwise been left on, please record this by scoring the number 2 next to the light bulb icon and then saving your new score.

If you have unplugged a mobile phone charger which wasn't being used, but which was using electricity and warm to the touch please record this by scoring the number 1.

We haven't been able to design an icon for every conceivable electrical item so please record anything we have missed by adding this to your score for the "other" icon.

If you've done something positive, such as installing an energy saving light bulb, please add this to your score for the icon which most closely resembles this electrical item.

All of the scores you enter rely on your honesty, and are purely indicative and for fun. Some people will go crazy but we'd rather just ask you to record what you have actually done and leave it at that.

We won't be able to measure the precise effect of what you doing this time around, but we'll see if we can try this next time!

Right now the most important thing is probably for you to think about what you could leave off and to become familiar with how this application works.

We'll be freezing scores once E-Day has finished.

You'll be able to see your score on the "Leave It Off" page within this application, your friends' energy saving score card can be seen on the "Friends" page, while all of the measures which have been undertaken by everyone who has installed this application will be recorded on the "Total Stats" page.

This application's news page summarises any mention of Energy Saving Day or E-Day as detected by Google News and you can access some of the films on E-Day's You Tube channel (http://www.youtube.com/energysaving) via this application's video page.

We've added a couple of silly items to make sure you are thinking about all of the available options. Well done if you have spotted them, and thanks for taking part!

Please also consider joining E-Day's Facebook group if you would like to link up with any of the other people who are taking part in E-Day.

Warmest regards,

Simon, Colm, Steve and Matt

E-Day's Facebook application was built by a team consisting of Simon Alexanderson, Colm Massey, Steve Hyland (Hyl Design), Paul Harrison (Idonix) and Matt Prescott (E-Day).

Simon was responsible for all of this application's programming and organisation, having never done anything with Facebook only a couple of weeks ago.

Colm infamously offered to see what was possible with Facebook, and ended up helping to co-ordinate a flood of ideas and volunteer testers from the other side of the Atlantic.

Steve designed the beautiful icons which have been used to represent all of the simple energy saving actions we could think of, plus some which are just for fun!

Paul contributed assistance with the handling of E-Day's real time data... in his super-cool and groovy way.

Matt challenged Colm and Simon to see whether an application like this could be built in record time and with zero budget!

Well done and thanks to everyone involved! Matt
